Artist's Comments

Based on an old painting that received quite a few critiques, especially on the composition. Revised most parts and try to enhance the original idea of an intense run/chase scene.

Oh, and... just in case anyone wonder, the original piece was done before Mirror's Edge :P

No direct photo reference used for character poses

My main criticism is the use of motion blur. There are two things blurred. The front man's right leg, and the car man's hand. I think the image would be better off without the blurs both because clearly other things are moving just as fast, like why would just the man's one leg be blurred, or just the man's hand? I also do not like the style of the blurs as they look kind of filtered rather than painted. The other faint motion streaks don't bother me.

The anatomy and perspective is great, though. The lighting is also good but you might consider making the sun smaller and less blurry, assuming that yellow blur behind the building is the sun. The sun is actually quite white unless it is being viewed lower on the horizon where the atmosphere begins to only let the the yellows and reds through. Much as I hate to admit it for some reason I also envision a lens flare, haha...

      Hey Geck,

Thanks for the critique and comments! I agree with the motion blur on the right leg is a bit much so I reduced it. Also adjusted the color of the sun.

As for the lens flare, I struggled, but it would just look too digital/photoshoped... so ha

p.s. not sure why the main image didn't update, but if you click on the image to view, it'll show up the updated version.

Looks like the small view is updated now to me. Looks a lot better too! And I wouldn't worry about the lens flare, it's certainly no big loss. Most lens flares DO look bad. That comment was more about that when I look at the pic,  I can practically see one because artists use them so much so my brain seems to think it should be there. But really, I don't think it would add that much to the picture.

It's fine for me too. There seemed to be a delay in updating the small view.

Similar with motion blur as you put before which took away the painting feel of the piece, lens flare does the same thing. it's one of the those tricks that attracts attention but may takes away the visual focus of the main subject. And yeah, quite often it's over used.

          Thanks again for your feedback!
