Grew up with that story, did you see the film?
The reason why I ask is because the creatures are quite far from what get shown in the film but that might have been a requirement from the client?

  Hey - I didn't see the film, or get a chance to read the story beyond a quick skim. It needed to be done really fast, so the AD had the comp layed out already and just gave me the info. I'm curious to see the differences now though!

    The bird-creature (vildvittra) looked like this:

    http://images.elfwood.com/art/b/r/brodin/vittra3.jpg (close enough drawing).
    
    And the little gnomes that live under the earth(Rumpnissar) looked like this:
    http://www.swepett.pp.se/digipix/030727/images/DSC01422.jpg (Doll from the actual movie, though most of them where actually humans in masks)
    The movie is from...1980 I believe... so it's no wonder in special effects..
