This was my first attempt at more serious matte painting. It took me about 4 days to complete. First I did a mockup model of the city and tower in 3dsmax. Taking this render into Photoshop, with some basic texturing applied, I started to paint on top of it and adding photos to complete the image. After 2 days I had completed the image of the city with the mountains in the background. Seeing it like this, I thought that it would look much better if there was a larger landscape to behold, so I stretched the canvas about 3 times what I had and started to paint the overall background, which took another day.

    Awesome work Andreas, with a wonderful backdrop to set off the mystical, yet realistic feel of the settlement. $ days too - pretty quick work for the detail!
