Finally getting back to some 3D/2D hybrid ideas. 

I've long wanted to find an approach that uses 3D as a base, but transcends it in the 2D paint phase -- not constrained by a realistic render... something beyond a 'paint-over'.

...feel like this piece is a positive step in that direction.

Rouged out forms in GroBoto and composited several renders in Photoshop. The renders were intentionally vague (mosly depth images)... just something to indicate perspective, form, volume... get the brain firing.
