The original digital painting began around 1992 and included small fragments of a clipart photo of a cluster of butterflies. This particular incarnation began Feb. 2009 and represents at least thirty hours of additional painting as I completely reworked the background and added the serpent.
Aside from obvious associations with ancient Egyptian symbolism (the winged scarab and the serpent), the background takes this into a nightmarish Lovecraftian realm of unspeakable sensuality and horror. Writhing tendrils surround a yawning triskelid orifice which bears an intentional resemblance to a vulval vestibule as well as resembling a gaping alien mouth. "Feed Me, Seymour!"
