I got a figure printed out of my Trixie character from Shapeways a while ago, and Ive just painted it.

Extremely pleased with how it looks!
Hopefully, I can get a limited run made in plastic - I just have to find the right people.

  Yeah. Since then i discovered how smooth you can get them. Ownage are making the final version for production now - really smooth.

    I'd like to see that, I've been looking into doing a commission work with someone who can print out a model for me to paint. I'm interested in painting models but i have no experience with the computer or sculpting by hand.

  Cool! Im getting a run of about 40-50 manufactured. The 'master' print should be being made around now.
  The quality and finish of the final thing will be loads better than this! Much smoother and cleaner.

Great design, Andy - but IMO the 3Dprint is really rough due to the low-res Shapeways output; you shouldn't have to try to control the finish through paint application - that's nuts.

If I may, I'd like to suggest another printer, Ownage.. Here are a few links from forums at 'ZBrush Central' with examples, comments, and discussions with the owner himself, a really cool guy who bends over backwards to help his clients - they'll even fully finish/paint your piece to spec!;

  Ive heard of ownage, but their site didnt give me as much insight, or as much eye candy as those links. The quality is stunning, and i didnt realise they produced the gaming heads figures - i have the heavy on pre-order since spring!
  Really smooth finish, and great definition.
  
  Ill definately drop them both an email. Looks like theyre the right guys for the job. I might try atomic monkey too, as they did a good job on Chris Sanders' figure.
